4-Acetoxy-Dimethyltryptamine

Overview

Acetyl ester of Psilocin, 4-ACO-DMT aka O-Acetylpsilocin is a semi-synthetic derivative of tryptamine with psychoactive effects. It is a new research chemical being studied for its pharmacological effects. 4-ACO0DMT is also known as a prodrug of psilocin because it is formed by the acetylation of psilocin in the presence of a strongly acidic or alkaline environment. The compound is deacetylated under the acidic conditions of the human stomach. Being a derivative of psilocin, this research chemical is more resistant to oxidation than its parent compound.

This street drug is available in the form of pills, gel, capsules, and powder.

History

4-ACO-DMT was first introduced in the market by Sandoz Limited, in 1963. However, despite being known for so long, its use in history has been very limited. It is an acetyl ester of psilocin, a hallucinogenic found in mushrooms. This research chemical is studied in response to the ban on psilocin mushrooms, to make legal highs.

Street Names

4-ACO-DMT is marketed worldwide by the following street names making it more attractive for its buyers:

  • Prism
  • Synthetic shrooms
  • Psilacetin
  • O-Acetylpsilocin

Mechanism of action

Deacetylation

4-ACO-DMT undergoes first-pass metabolism in the liver and stomach where it is deacetylated to psilocin in the presence of the acidic or alkaline environment. This is why 0-Acetylpsilocin is called a prodrug od psilocin.

5HT2A receptor activation

4-ACO-DMT exerts its psychoactive effects through the serotonergic pathway. Serotonin is a very important neurotransmitter involved in mood stabilization and pleasure. Lack of this hormone involved in the pathogenesis of depression. Serotonin acts through 5HT2A receptors. Having a similar pathway of action, 4-ACO-DMT produces effects similar to that of serotonin.

It is said that 0-psilocybin acts for a shorter duration than Psilocin.

Effects

On average, the psychoactive effects of O-acetyl psilocin start after 5-10 minutes and peak around 2-3 hours. The time in between is the plateau level.

Euphoria

Being a psychoactive drug, 4-ACO-DMT produces a sense of euphoria, laughter and increased pleasure among its users. One experiences wonderful feelings. It also elevates one’s spiritual and mystical experiences.

Cognitive effects

The users of the 0-Acetylpsilocin report that the drug stimulates their mental functions producing a feeling of “buzz”. It lets them enjoy their otherwise tiring routine tasks. It increases their creativity and let the ideas flow. The users also said that the drug lets them produce philosophical thoughts and do self-analysis. It also causes a loss of ego.

This research chemical lets its users do self-analysis and develop peace in themselves and with others. It enhances one’s ability to empathize.

Vision

4-ACO-DMT enhances the vision of its users allowing brighter color perception.

Toxicity

Similar to all other psych effective drugs, 4-ACO-DMT also produces multiple adverse and unwanted effects in its users. Small doses of this research chemical are safe. However, larger doses can produce the following toxic effects:

Overstimulation

High doses of 4-ACO-DMT can cause overstimulation of serotonin receptors producing effects like increased heart rate, insomnia, muscle fatigue and ache.

Vision

Higher doses of this drug produce visual effects like disturbed vision and external hallucinations.

Cognitive

Excess intake of this street drug causes confusion, anxiety, paranoia, production of overwhelming ideas, external hallucinations and a sense of fear among its users.

Vasomotor effects

This street drug causes an increase in heart rate and sweating producing chills and flushing due to peripheral vasodilatation.
