Becoming Proactive in Protecting Our Children's Rights
A Very Personal Choice
If you're a parent of a loved one that just came out to you, you would very unlikely want to picture yourself being public about your child's sexual orientation. In fact, that might not be a wise thing to do until you have walked through different stages of getting support to overcome the initial negative reactions, learning more about yourself and your gay loved one, and becoming comfortable with the revelation to the point of acceptance.
People contribute to society in different ways. Some work "behind the scenes." Others are more overt about what they want to accomplish for their communities. Whatever your style, remember to do first things first. You, and only you, will be able to decide when you're ready to participate in your loved one's life through advocacy.
Although one of PFLAG's missions is to promote a better world for our LGBT children, we respect individual choices in the matter.
