March 2014 Meeting - Author Lou Anne Smoot - A Christian Coming Out

posted Feb 11, 2014, 1:23 PM by General Information PFLAG Denton

March 9, 2014 at 3:00 PM
Guest Speaker: Lou Anne Smoot will discuss her book A Christian Coming Out

At 24, Lou Anne Smoot, a lesbian, did what she had been taught was the "right thing."  She married and was faithful to her husband for 37 years.  At age 60, while teaching a ladies' Sunday School class in conservative East Texas, her self-made wall came crashing down when a member of her class declared that "God made homosexuals and loves them just the way they are."  Lou Anne's life as a wife, mother of four children, devout Baptist, community leader, and a deeply closeted homosexual took a dramatic turn which led her into a life change faced by few people her age.  Her recently published book, A Christian Coming Out, is based on her brutally honest journal and invites the reader into Lou Anne's thoughts and actions as she first admits to her husband that she is gay, then begins coming out to family and friends while remaining active in the First Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas.

Lou Anne's publisher stated:  "I wept as I read the proof of Lou Anne's book and each time I worked on the manuscript, I was unable to hold back the tears.  We decided to publish the book in part to portray the depth of human suffering we cause when we tell people it is not acceptable to be who they are.  There are plenty of books written by homosexuals who either gave up on or were pushed out of the church.  This book is different.  Lou Anne feels that one of the things she is supposed to do at this stage in her life is stay in her church and give people who have known her for decades the opportunity to see she is the same person, only better.  She is free to live the life she was born to live.

Following Lou Anne's presentation, a "talk-back" session will be offered.  To learn more about A Christian Coming Out, go to www.louannesmoot.com   Also check out Lou Anne's facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LouAnneSmoot?ref=stream&hc_location=timeline&filter=1
